Trump’s Attack on Black Pro Athletes Just Backfired on His Wallet

More and more professional sports teams are no longer staying at Trump Hotels, and a growing number of those teams say its because of his “divisiveness.”

According to a Washington Post report, 16 out of 17 teams from the four major professional sports leagues have stopped staying at Trump properties in recent years — especially since Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president.

The teams that have stopped using Trump hotels since the 2014-2015 season include the Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards.

Seven of the teams confirmed to the Post that Trump’s politics were the reason they were no longer clients.

“The president has seemingly made a point of dividing us as best he can,” Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “He continually offends people, and so people don’t want to stay at his hotel. It’s pretty simple.”

The Warriors stopped using Trump properties after the 2015-2016 season.

Other than his Washington hotel and Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump Organization properties are no doubt losing revenue due to organizations that no longer utilize Trump facilities in order to avoid political controversy, as teams would spend around $20,000 a night to stay at the Trump Hotel in the SoHo neighorhood of New York City. Charity groups and golf tournaments are also dropping Trump properties, and in some cases, financial losses have doubled.

The White House has denied that the Trump Organization’s revenue losses are not connected to the president’s recent attacks on professional athletes, including NFL players protesting inequality by kneeling during the national anthem and Warriors star Steph Curry, who has spoken out against Trump’s policies and said he would not go to the White House for a championship celebration. The Warriors decided as a team they would not attend the White House photo op. Other star athletes have mentioned they are “proud” not to stay at Trump Hotels due to his policies.
