Here’s Great Tip: The Science of Love | John Gottman | TEDxVeniceBeach

Here is Something You Should See…

World-renowned relationship expert John Gottman set forth to understand why relationships don’t work, but for that he needed to first understand relationships scientifically. Gottman then measured the behavior, perception and physiology of couples over time to understand how love works. With that he was able to create equations for love and discern the mathematical dynamics of love. His science was able to predict with a 90% accuracy whether relationships would last or not. Finally, his studies conclude that the magic of love requires calm and commitment, which in the end makes the magic of great love a bit less of a mystery.

John Gottman speaks about how his scientific research has now created a new understanding of all love relationships (heterosexual and same-sex), across the entire life span. He describes the new LOVE EQUATIONS, and the magic trio of calm, trust, and commitment. For more, visit The Gottman Institute at World-renowned for his work on marital stability and divorce prediction, Dr. John Gottman has conducted 40 years of breakthrough research with thousands of couples. He is the author of over 200 published academic articles and author or co-author of more than 40 books, including The New York Times bestseller The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.

Dr. Gottman’s media appearances include Good Morning America, Today, CBS Morning News, and Oprah, as well articles in The New York Times, Redbook, Glamour, Woman’s Day, People, Self, and Psychology Today. Co-founder of The Gottman Institute with his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, John is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Washington where he founded ”The Love Lab” at which much of his research on couples interactions was conducted. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

  1. Its a very good talk and appreciate the science behind it.. only thing I am wondering about; he talks about going to a therapist and regain that magic, but how does one do that? I think that is the tricky part.. I mean a lot of times I would like to be nice and gentle in a fight and switch to being positive, but one would also like to make their point and improve the relationship. How do you regain the magic if you dont agree and your point is really important for the relationship?

  2. my grandparentrs adored each other and showed it in front of me all the time…they were my role model for love….that same quote from Sleepless In Seattle..that was them and that is my husband of 40yrs and I

  4. Bob Dylan fooled the world for decades claiming to have written many of the melodies to his hit songs when in fact most of the melodies were from preexisting songs that he did not write, including Blowin In The Wind.

In a last nail in the coffin scenario James Damiano's movie "Eleven Years" draws the straw that breaks the camel's back, rivets Bob Dylan to his secret past of plagiarism and rewrites musical history"……Virtue Films

No artist can lay claim to the controversy that has surrounded the career of songwriter James Damiano. Forty Two years ago James Damiano began an odyssey that led him into a legal maelstrom with Bob Dylan that, to this day, fascinates the greatest of intellectual minds.

Since auditioning for the legendary CBS Record producer John Hammond, Sr., who influenced the careers of music industry icons Charlie Christian, Billy Holiday, Bob Dylan, Pete Seger, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughan , James has engaged in a half a billion dollar copyright infringement law suit with Bob Dylan.

As the curtain rises on the stage of deceit we learn that CBS / Sony international recording artist, Bob Dylan not only used songs and lyrics written by James Damiano but also solicited Mr. Damiano's materials for a period of over ten years and eleven months.

Bob Dylan's name is credited to the songs. One of those songs is nominated for a Grammy as the best rock song of the year. Ironically the title of that song is Dignity.

  5. I find maths' contribution is unnecessary and risky: it turns obvious symptoms into cause and parameters. The typical risk is to swich effects into causes, quantity into quality.
We might end up depending on parameters and expert advices, when all that experts and maths can do is to measure things.
I am afraid science has never helped moral progress for this reason: it can't handle nor comprehend quality, the nature of things and problems. But pushes our reality and perception into a criteria (measured in situations that we determine as good, nuat because of the criteria, and take parameters out of it).
It may worth to having an anlyitical approach to realationships. But when we get to the point of making predictions, graphs and equations, I am afraid we are forcing real things into solutions that don't respect nor reflect reality, but just our urge to control it.
All in all, the nice guy of the talk has reported a set of very obviois things, all psychologosts and common sense know very well. He just came out with some graphs: and we all are tentend to rushing into the next "scientific solutioners".
